Matt Van Wyk

Matt Van Wyk is a craft beer industry veteran with more than two decades of experience brewing in the Midwest and in the Pacific Northwest.  A Science teacher by trade, Matt spent one fateful summer vacation working in the cellar of a small local brewpub where he quickly found a passion for brewing and an outlet for his creativity.  Needless to say, Neuqua Valley High School lost a talented science teacher for good that summer.

Matt dove head first into brewing, studying techniques formally at Siebel Institute of Technology and working full time as a brewer for a couple of small breweries before being offered the brewmaster job at Flossmoor Station in 2003.  In 2006, he was recognized nationally for his talents, being named the Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival. That award and national recognition eventually allowed him to transition to the Pacific Northwest, a region Matt loved for both its beer and fantastic quality of life.  In 2009 Matt relocated to Eugene where he led the team at Oakshire Brewing for 7 years before leaving to start Alesong with Brian and Doug.

Matt lives in Eugene with his wife, and after raising children, now in college, enjoys the new free time camping, hiking, and exploring the breweries and wineries in the Pacific Northwest.
